When HOC was formed in 1968 orienteering in the UK was evolving rapidly. The previous twelve months had seen the formation of the British Orienteering Federation and the staging of the first National Championships in Hamsterley Forest but the purpose drawn orienteering map was still a thing of the future; 1:25000 OS maps were used, sometimes with corrections, and control descriptions either contained the definite article (signifying the feature was on the map) or the indefinite article (signifying it wasn’t!)….
The Compleat MadHoc
AdHoc was the club’s monthly magazine for many decades. Between 2006 and 2011 it also reported on the club’s alterego; it made me giggle at the time and it still does. However, to quote my predecessor “the Webmaster and any past or present Ad Hoc editors deny all responsibility for the content therein”. The 2020s
2024 2023 HOC / COBOC merger. JJ 40th. SinS year. 2022 saw Birmingham City Centre host a Euro City Tour event. 2021 saw the sport returning after the height of Covid19 restrictions. One result was two Club Championships in the same calendar year. An informal picnic at Hartlebury Common in June after the 2021 version was so popular that it raised the question – should we move the Championships from December to a warmer month? 2020 The year of lockdowns….
The 2010s
2019 feels like a distant memory and doesn’t seem to have any distinguishing features. I’ll check the newsletters to see what I’ve forgotten. 2018 was memorable for our 50th anniversary and “the snowy JK relays”; read all about it in its very own annual review. The 2000’s
2009 HOC were fifth in their first ever appearance at the CompassSport Cup final, and won the Laurie Bradley Trophy. A 2009 Calendar of events was produced, featuring images from 2008‘s National Event on Brown Clee. 2008 This was our 40th anniversary year. 2007 The HOC junior team “Revision Avoidance” triumph at the Harvester relays at Penhale. Harlequin of the Year
This trophy is awarded at the discretion of the Chairman. It is awarded on the basis of out-of-the-ordinary service to the Club.
