Harlequins fielded four teams at the British Sprint Relay Championships on Saturday 30th August which took place at RAF Honington near Bury St. Edmunds. This made for fast, flat courses with plenty of historic military assets on display, some of which were deployed as control sites. The format calls for mixed gender teams of three (four in the elite classes), with Harlequins’ two Junior teams bagging 6th and 8th places, our Super Veterans 10th and Veterans 19th.

The action moved over to the University of East Anglia, Norwich on the Sunday for the individual events. This presented a complex three dimensional challenge, with very careful map reading and close attention to control descriptions needed to avoid getting flummoxed by the multiple levels of concrete. This was even more so moving from the morning qualifying races to the afternoon finals, when some of the buildings which had been closed in the morning were opened up to offer additional route choice through their internal spaces.

There was an impressive count of five HOC medallists: James Thomas (3rd M35), Karen Thompson (3rd W55), Chris McCartney (3rd M55), Georgina Hudson (3rd W12) and Seb Blackmore (2nd M14).
